Act I—Voices from the Heart

All smiles for these girlsThe first act is a rich and lively anthology of poems, songs, dances and stories about people who have developmental disabilities from the perspectives of the individuals, family members and the greater community. These pieces are presented in readers’ theatre format and often incorporate original works from student performers in that local community. The Director has creative freedom to incorporate the students’ own artistic work or select from scripted pieces.

Act II—Dance With Me

Adapted from an award-winning play,* the second act is an engaging drama about the relationship between Tom (or Tam if it’s a girl) who has Down syndrome, and his older sister Cricket. Tom loves music and dance, but makes life difficult for Cricket as she balances school, friends and family. Through humorous dialogue, tense confrontation and emotional upheaval, Cricket grows to accept and support her brother, while pursuing her own life aspirations.
